League Gothic is a revival of an old classic, and one of our favorite typefaces, Alternate Gothic #1. It was originally designed by for the in 1903. The company went bankrupt in 1993, and since the original typeface was created before 1923, the typeface is in the public domain. We decided to make our own version, and contribute it to the Open Source Type Movement. Thanks to a commission from the fine & patient folks over at, it's been revised & updated with contributions from Micah Rich, Tyler Finck, and, who contributing extra glyphs.

Apple's reasons for hiding this font have not been made public, but licensing reasons [ ] have been suggested as the cause. If Word is substituting a different font it may be that your copy of Bank Gothic is damaged in some way. I'd suggest that you first use Font Book to Validate the font & confirm that you don't have duplicates of it. Word is quite sensitive to invalid fonts.
Additionally, confirm that your installation of Office 2016 & OS X are fully updated. There also may be some compatibility/usability issues if you're using OS X 10.11.x -- I haven't used that version, but Bank Gothic works fine here in OS X 10.10.5 with Office 2016 [v15.16].
