Amazon Parallels Desktop 7 For Mac
I've been using this on my MacBook Pro for four years now, with no problems. I wanted to be able to run Windows programs on the Mac, including Microsoft Office and ShareScope. I could have bought the Mac version of Office instead, but there was no way I could get ShareScope onto the Mac without Parallels or Boot Camp.

With Parallels I can run Mac and Windows programs at the same time, whereas with Boot Camp I'd need to re-boot to switch between them. I've been using Windows for years, but prefer the Mac user interface; this way I can gradually migrate myself to the Mac world without losing the ability to go back to Windows as needed. I've upgraded Parallels each time OSX has been upgraded, so I'm running 11.2.1 now. I've kept to Windows 7, as it runs my old Office 2007 and ShareScope just fine.

I've been toying with setting up another virtual machine for Ubuntu, so then I'd have Mac, Windows, and Linux programs all running in parallel, easy to switch between them - but haven't got round to that yet. I'm confident that will work fine. I've dropped a star because of the need to keep paying for upgrades. Whenever OSX gets a facelift to a new version, the Parallels people send out a mail saying that their new version is optimised for the new OSX. It may be that the old version of Parallels runs ok on the updated OSX, but I don't want to take the risk. And you need to pay for Parallels upgrades, which is a drag. Bought my new macbook pro last Saturday, got it home downloaded from the app store what I thought would be the equivalent of some software I use on my Windows laptop, to find that it is only available as an American version and that this therefore was not compatible for printing out with my English printer - fab!
Didn't tell me that in the app store, not impressed £20 for nothing! So, as I use the software for making all my cards, I had to find a way of it working on my mac, and this is where this amazing product came in. I'd never heard of it until I did some research online. I needed to find a way of getting my Windows software on my very expensive new toy and this has allowed me to do it quickly, all be it expensively (as obviously I also had to spend over £100 on a copy of Windows 7 to accompany this!) I actually downloaded the parallels 7 from their website as a trial, so I have simply brought the boxed version for the serial number from Amazon, as the trial only lasts 14 days. Why not buy the full version from the parallels website, wouldn't it be easier? Yes, it probably would however, to do that costs £64 and to buy this boxed version cost me £39 (Amazon cheaper by quite a mark, as it was over £60 from other suppliers.) The price seems to be changing daily on Amazon at the moment. When I put the product in my basket one day it was £44.00, by the time I came to checkout, it had gone down to £39, which of course was fine by me!
Now it's up to just over £40. At least it shows Amazon regularly reviews it's prices, unlike some of it's competitors. The product is extremely easy to install, it tells you exactly what to do from the minute you download it, or put the disc in your drive. You have two options to run Windows as a mac, or to run it as you would usually see it on a Windows build PC. I chose the later, but it did say that it was easy to go back and change this. I do wonder if I should have not choosen the easy option of running it how it would look ordinarily as that doesn't exactly teach me how to use a mac (which is very different as i've only ever used Windows pc's in the past.) You can put a parallels icon in your dock, and to switch to Windows you simply click on it, it really is that simple. Once parallels is installed on your machine, you obviously need to install your Windows product.
